Job Description

As a Senior Culture Media Specialist (Scientist III) within our Microbiology Division you’ll be working in our R&D Team on the development and support of culture media products and workflows for the clinical, industrial and pharmaceutical markets. You’ll work in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidance by senior team members/R&D Manager, to ensure work is carried out within schedule.

Responsibilities:

As a member of the Culture Media development team, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Acting as R&D technical lead for Culture Media new product development projects, including:

  • Collaboratively planning projects in agreement with the project team to agreed specifications.

  • Compiling necessary project design control documentation,

  • Planning and performing culture media formulation development project experiments in accordance with plan.

  • Proactively seeking solutions to mitigate risks that may impact project work/timelines.

  • Delivering project work in accordance with agreed schedules and budgets.

  • Producing and delivering progress reports, including to senior leadership, in accordance with project timescale.

Completing project activities including but not limited to:

  • Conducting stability studies for newly developed products.

  • Planning and conducting competitor benchmarking and post-market surveillance studies.

  • Demonstrating the ability to interpret large, complex datasets and make technical decisions.

  • Demonstrating a strong understanding of the processes involved in manufacture of culture media products.

  • Acting as subject matter expert in culture media product design and suitability for end users.

  • Monitoring the relevant scientific industry to understand requirements of end users and anticipate changes in product/workflow requirements to meet evolving needs.

  • Assisting R&D managers in the establishment and implementation of R&D strategies.

  • Championing innovation; initiating ideas for new or improved products or processes with customer focus.

  • Applying strong communication skills, to efficiently and effectively present complex technical information to a range of audiences.

  • Representation of the business at external meetings in the scientific community.

  • Providing support to existing product portfolio through understanding of scientific principles, sourcing of new raw materials, and examination of new processes.

  • Understanding the performance metrics, safety metrics and practices for the team/department.

  • Maintaining laboratory notebooks to the appropriate standard.

  • Providing product training to internal and external customers.

  • Providing advanced technical training to peers and technical stakeholders,

  • Actively engaging in regular performance and development conversations and acting on feedback as appropriate.

  • Fulfilling the responsibilities of the position as defined in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Health, Safety and Environmental policies and associated Codes of Practice and actively promoting Health and Safety awareness.

  • Any other duties/projects that are within the skills and ability of the post-holder.

Minimum Qualifications/Experience:

  • Microbiology (or another biological science related) degree and significant experience in microbiology laboratory setting.

  • Strong technical knowledge of culture media formulation design.

  • Evidence of strong competency in microbiological techniques and procedures.

  • Evidence of excellent organizational and strong communication skills.

  • Evidence of innovative approach to problem solving in complex projects.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software is required.

  • Knowledge of PPI Business systems or equivalent is preferred but not essential.
